How to Make an Outdoor Bioethanol Fireplace?
Do you want to create your own outdoor bioethanol fireplace, where you can choose exactly what it should look like? Then this will be the right solution for you!
When building your own fireplace for outdoor use, there are two different types that can be designed according to your wishes - a bioethanol fire or a gas fireplace. In this guide we will describe how to make your own outdoor bio fireplace. If you want to make your own outdoor gas fire, you can read our guide on how to build your own gas patio heater here.
A bioethanol fireplace will add cosiness in form of the lively orange flames, as well as a little bit of warmth. The heating effect itself depends on the size of the flames. However, you will easily feel the heat indoors from a bioethanol fire, since the heat output provided is minimal compared to other outdoor heating options. Therefore, it is important to say, that if you want a fireplace with the intention of increasing the temperature in the evening, you should not choose a biofuel fireplace, but rather a gas patio heater or an electric patio heater.
What You Will Need to Build an Outdoor Bio Ethanol Fire
An outdoor bio ethanol fire is relatively simple to install as it can be done by private individuals and does not necessarily require a professional. To install one, the most important is to remember that it is real fire and it will get hot.
We have a lot of customers who wants to install a bioethanol burner in an outdoor table or something similar. Therefore, we have made this guide about what you will need for a DIY-project like that.
If You Have Furniture Made of Flammable Materials You Will Need...
- Fireproof materials around the burner - Fermacell, plaster boards, steel, stone, etc.
- Outdoor burner
- Bioethanol
- Lighter
- A funnel to make the filling easier (not necessary)
For outdoor use, it is always a good idea to put glass around the flames, since a bioethanol fireplace is very wind sensitive. For our outdoor burners, it is possible to buy a frame with glass, where the burner can hang. By using this, you will not have to use further fireproof materials around the burner.

What is Important to Know about an Outdoor Bio Ethanol Fireplace?
Choose the Right Burner
Protection
We will always recommend to take the burner inside after use if it is possible. If not, you must protect it with a cover or something similar.
Another very important factor is to avoid water or leafs to get into the opening of the burner. This must be avoided as our burners contain ceramic wool that will absorb the liquid. If water gets in, it can be very difficult to get out, so make sure to protect the fireplace properly.
The Mounting of a Burner in a Furniture
One thing, you should always be sure of is that there is air around the burner - it should not be totally enclosed, as it needs to be able to dissipate the heat. The top of the burner is slightly larger than the bottom, which allows the burner to float.
You can find the dimensions of each burner on each product, where it also will be possible to find a technical drawing.
