The bedroom is more than just a place to sleep. It is where the day begins gently, where evenings slow down and where you can leave the outside world behind.
A fireplace can make this space feel even more inviting. The movement of real flames, the soft glow across the walls and the warmth of a thoughtfully styled interior all help create a relaxing atmosphere, turning your bedroom into a cosy retreat to return to at the end of the day.
And you don’t necessarily need a traditional chimney to enjoy the beauty of a fire. Bioethanol fireplaces offer a contemporary way to introduce real flames into your home, complementing everything from clean, minimalist interiors to rooms filled with natural textures and warm, traditional details.
But is it safe?
“I love the idea of having a bioethanol fireplace in my bedroom, but is it actually safe?”
Expert advice
Bioethanol fireplaces bring the beauty of real flames into your bedroom without the need for a traditional chimney or flue. They burn liquid bioethanol fuel, producing heat, water vapour and carbon dioxide rather than the smoke and soot associated with wood-burning fires. However, adequate ventilation is essential.
Choosing the right model and following the manufacturer’s instructions are key. Always observe the recommended clearances and ventilation requirements, and make sure the fireplace is fully extinguished before going to sleep. Never refill a burner while it is lit or still hot; allow it to cool completely before adding fuel.

Bioethanol fireplaces burn liquid fuel to create real flames, releasing heat, water vapour and carbon dioxide. They require no traditional chimney or flue, but adequate ventilation and the correct installation are essential.
The key is choosing a model specifically approved for the intended room and following its instructions for room size, ventilation and clearances. Always extinguish the fire before leaving it unattended or going to sleep, and never refill the burner while it is lit or hot. Allow it to cool completely before adding fuel.

Find the right fireplace for your bedroom
In a bedroom, a small wall-mounted model with a glass front is usually the best fit. It takes up no floor space and keeps the flame safely behind glass.

Our pick for the bedroom is the Nebraska, available in white and black. At 78 × 54 × 16.5 cm, it sits close to the wall, and its safety glass makes it suitable for homes with children or pets. With a maximum output of 1.5 kW, it needs a room of at least 40 m³, the size of a 4 × 4 m bedroom, and one filling burns for up to six hours.
Where you place it matters just as much. The installation manual for the Nebraska recommends mounting it 80–120 cm above the floor, with at least 60 cm free to each side and at least 100 cm free above. Keep the bed, curtains and bedding well away from the front of the fire, and read more about safety distances. The drawing below shows how that could look in a typical bedroom.

How big does your bedroom need to be?
Every bioethanol fireplace has a minimum room size, given in cubic metres. It tells you how much air the room needs for the fire to burn safely, and it is one of the most important things to check before buying for a bedroom.
To work out your room size, multiply the length, width and ceiling height. Our guide to room size and fireplace size explains it in more detail.

The beauty of real flames: bioethanol bedroom fireplaces
Few features create the same sense of intimacy as a real flame. A bioethanol fireplace brings natural movement and a warm visual glow to the bedroom, creating a beautiful setting for quiet evenings and slower mornings.
A minimalist burner set into a stone surround can feel architectural and contemporary, while a fireplace framed by warm plaster or darker finishes can create a more dramatic, cocoon-like atmosphere.
Bioethanol fireplaces use liquid fuel and produce a real flame, so bedroom installation requires particular care. The specific model must be suitable for the intended room, with the manufacturer’s requirements for ventilation, clearances and installation followed precisely.
How one of our customers did it

One of our customers chose a black, see-through freestanding bioethanol fireplace for their bedroom. It stands on a low stone plinth beside the bed, so the flame can be enjoyed from the bed and from the rest of the room.
The dark steel frame contrasts beautifully with the light oak cabinetry and soft carpet, and the large windows keep the room bright during the day.

Where to place your fireplaceIs a bioethanol fireplace safe in the bedroom?
Safety depends on the specific model and how it is installed. Always check that the fireplace is approved for bedroom use and follow its installation instructions.
Because a bioethanol fireplace burns a real flame, it needs particular care. The room must meet the model’s minimum size, it should be well ventilated, and there must be enough distance between the fire and anything that can burn, such as curtains, bedding and furniture.
Never assume a bioethanol fireplace is suitable for a bedroom simply because it is designed for indoor use. Our guide are bioethanol fireplaces safe? covers the basics. Check the manufacturer’s guidance before choosing a model, and contact our team if you are unsure.

No. Always put the fire out completely before going to sleep or leaving the room. See how to extinguish a bioethanol fireplace.
How long does one filling last?
It depends on the model and the size of the burner. The Nebraska burns for up to six hours on one filling, which is plenty for a long evening.
Will a bioethanol fireplace heat my bedroom?
It adds some warmth, but it should not be your bedroom’s main source of heat. The Nebraska has a maximum output of 1.5 kW, about the same as a small radiator. Read more in how warm are bioethanol fires really?
Can I have one in a small bedroom?
Only if the room meets the minimum room size stated for the model. In a small bedroom, an electric or water vapour fireplace is often the better choice. Compare the two in bioethanol fire or electric fire?
